Choosing a Pergola Size

Measure the furniture group first and the patio second. A dining set for six needs about 12 by 9 feet of clear floor; a two-seat lounge group needs about 9 by 7. Then add a walkway outside the posts. Area is the last number to look at, not the first.

Three measurements, in order

1. The furniture, with the chairs out. Not the table - the table plus the 2.5 to 3 feet a chair needs on every side. This is the number that eliminates most structures, and it is the one nobody measures.

2. The slab. A structure sized exactly to the patio leaves nowhere to walk past the furniture. Allow a margin outside the posts.

3. The area. Last, and only as a sanity check. Two structures with the same square footage behave differently if their shapes differ.

Every verdict above is calculated from the footprint the manufacturer publishes and the clear floor a furniture group needs, compared longest side to longest side. Ground conditions, walkways and local rules are not in the arithmetic. Measure the patio before ordering.

Reading it

The 10×10 is a lounge-scale structure: excellent over a seating group, two feet short for a rectangular dining set once the chairs come out. The 10×12 fits a dining set exactly. The 10×13 gazebo fits it with a little either side. The 12×16 has room around the furniture rather than under it.

None of those is a fault. They are four different rooms, and the question is which one the patio is for. Per-structure arithmetic is on the sizing pages.

Questions

What size pergola do I need?

Work from the furniture. A dining set for six needs about 12 by 9 feet of clear floor once the chairs are pulled out.

Should the pergola be the same size as the patio?

No. Leave a walkway outside the posts, or there is nowhere to pass the furniture.

Is a bigger pergola always better?

Only if the patio takes it. An oversized structure with no clearance is worse than a smaller one that fits.
